Shame on Hong Kong’s Entry Ban on Jens Galschiot
Pressing For the End of Political Censorship and Blacklisting Jen Galschiot, the sculptor of the ‘Pillar of Shame’ which stands on our campus, was barred from entry into Hong Kong after a 5-hour detention on 30 May 2009. This is the second time Galschiot has been barred from entry: his first expulsion occurred last year in the wake of the Beijing Olympics. This time, Galschiot was planning to repair the sculpture and to participate in the commemoration events on the 20th Anniversary of the June 4th Massacre. We deeply regret the Government’s absurd refusal Galschiot’s entry without reason. The absurdity is compounded by the fact that Galschiot had enquired regarding his application for entry in advance, but the Immigration Department merely gave standard replies containing entry guidelines. We note that Hong Kong has long been recognized as the free society and an international city, and the only place within China where the June 4th Massacre can be openly commemorated. Thus we are deeply shocked and angered that Galschiot, a mere artist holding a particular political view, is not permitted entry into the Region. We condemn the arbitrary and irrational decision which is purely political in nature, and as such is an illegitimate exercise of immigration control. We fear that the political censorship and blacklisting will severely undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and the ‘One Country Two Systems’ principle, and we lament that this disgraceful event puts the Region’s reputation as a free society into disrepute. We demand that the Hong Kong authorities immediate provide reasons for the expulsion of Galschiot, and to cease all political censorship and blacklisting. We stress that freedom is a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success, and it must not be compromised by trivial political considerations.
