CIVIC DEBATES
As the 20th anniversary of the violent suppression of the 1989 democracy movement in China draws close, three eye-witnesses to the crackdown reflect on the significance of this seminal event June 4 – Twenty Years On
SPEAKERS:
Jasper
Becker – covered the crackdown for the UK-based ‘Guardian’ newspaper,
author of many highly acclaimed books including ‘Hungry Ghosts’ and
‘The Chinese’
Han Dongfang (韓東方) – former railway worker who founded the PRC’s first independent trade union, was jailed for 22 months in the wake of Tiananmen after topping the most wanted list of dissidents Robin Munro- veteran human rights researcher was in Beijing on behalf of Human Rights Watch in June 1989, author of some of the best researched books on China’s dissident movement including ‘Black Hands of Beijing’
