本月十七日，南京大屠殺倖存者夏淑琴的律師收到4.55萬日圓作為誹謗的民事賠償。事緣在本年二月，日本最高法院就夏淑琴狀告《南京大屠殺的徹底檢證》一書作者東中野修道和出版社日本展轉出版社一案作出終審判決，裁定該書構成誹謗。

時至今日，夏淑琴為唯一在日本最高法院的訴訟中得到勝利並獲得賠償的倖存者。我們歡迎日本法院是次的裁決和賠償安排。我們深信，本案標誌著南京大屠殺受害者在尋求公義和揭露真相的路途上一重大勝利。

儘管如此，至今並未有屠殺倖存者就日軍的惡行而獲得賠償。我們強烈譴責日本政府至今仍然否定歷史事實以及歌頌戰犯。我們在此促請日本當局立即為屠城事件道歉和合理賠償受害者及其親屬。為此，我們希望日本人民能認清真相全部，毋忘歷史事實。在屠殺七十多年後的今天，我們要求公義能得以伸張，令受害者的創傷和烙印能得以撫平。

On 17 April 2009, compensation in libel amounting to 4.55 million yen was paid to the lawyers of Chinese Nanjing Massacre survivor, Xia Shuqin.  Xia won a three-year lawsuit ending in February, when the Japanese Supreme Court ruled that Japanese author, Shudo Higashinakano, and his book publisher, Tendensha, were liable in defamation for producing a book about the Nanking Massacre in which Xia was called a false witness.

Xia is the only survivor from the Nanjing Massacre to have won at the highest appellant court and been awarded compensation.  We welcome the Court’s ruling and the payment in damages.  We believe that this signifies more than the receipt of a monetary remedy, but marks an important victory to all who suffered because of the Massacre, in their fight for justice and the unveiling of the truth. 

We, however, recognize that no compensation has ever been awarded to survivors for the harm caused by the unimaginable atrocities committed by the Japanese army.  We thus strongly condemn the Japanese Government for continuing to deny the Nanjing Massacre and to glorify war criminals.  We urge that the Japanese Government immediately apologise for the Massacre and compensate the victims and their families for their suffering.  In doing so, we hope that the Japanese people will learn about and remember this historical tragedy.  More than 70 years on from Nanjing now, we demand that justice be finally done, and that long-overdue comfort be brought to all who suffered because of the Massacre.
